Imperial Ethiopian College of Heraldry
Note: Rules on Insignia from 1954 and 2002 Follow the Below Rules of Procedure for Armorial Grants and Registrations
Persons involved with Imperial Ethiopian or Dynastic Orders, Societies or organizations may petition the College for a Grant or Registration of Arms. Persons involved with Orders, Societies and organizations that are officially recognized and under the protection of the Emperor, or Crown Prince/Heir to the Solomonic Throne in the absence of the Emperor, may also petition the College for a Grant or Registration of Arms. Persons of African descent or currently resident in Africa may petition the College for a Grant or Registration of Arms. All other persons may petition the College for a Grant of Arms.
For persons requesting a Grant of Arms, each must request, in writing over the Internet, that the College authorize such a Grant. After the initial request, an application must be sent to the Office of the Solomonic King of Arms with the appropriate fees. A Warrant for a Grant shall be issued from the College and assigned to the appropriate Office within the College.
Persons requesting a Registration of Arms must provide the College with proof of a Grant from a competent Heraldic Authority or must submit to the College a request providing the date of assumption of the said Arms. Assumed Arms will be reviewed and adjudicated within the constructs of the Laws of Heraldry and, while registration may result, a Grant of Arms may instead be required.
A Grant of Arms shall consist of the following;
a. Shield
b. Mantling (if requested)
c. Helmet or Coronet (proper for station)
d. Wreath
e. Supporters (if proper)
f. Crest
g. Motto (if requested)
Mottos are considered by the College as personal augmentations to the Coat of Arms, and therefore may be added to the Coat of Arms at the request of the Grantee and subsequently placed above the Arms, below the Arms, or both above and below the Arms. Mottos included in the Grant of Arms are to be considered as an integral part of the Grant and may be changed only upon a request to the College. In the event that a motto is not included in the Grant, it may be added at a later time at the discretion of the Grantee and may be added to the Grant upon request to the College.
Decorations, such as medals or breast stars, will not be included on the achievement. However, they can be noted in the Letters Patent if requested. Augmentation of a Coat of Arms may be provided if the augmentation can be properly justified and adheres to the Laws of Heraldry. Holders of titles of Ethiopian Nobility, of the Collar or Grand Cross of an Imperial Order or of a grant of Arms with the requested augmentation from a recognized Crown may request augmentations to be granted. Augmentations include, but are not limited to, the addition of Supporters, recognized Coronets, Caps of Maintenance, and complete Mantles. Nothing in this rule precludes the granting of any augmentation by His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Zere Yacob as a mark of favor or merit.
Imperial Ethiopian or Dynastic Orders, Societies and organizations may request the College to design and register badges, seals, medallions, decorations and other insignia. All Imperial Ethiopian or Dynastic Orders, Societies and organizations, along with other Orders, Societies and organizations under the protection of the Solomonic Crown may register current badges, seals, medallions, decorations and insignia with the College as a repository for such items.
The costs of the Grant or Recognition of Arms, along with a charge for registration, will be borne exclusively by the grantee. The costs for services to Imperial Ethiopian or Dynastic Orders, Societies and organizations are borne by the College as services to the Crown. The costs for other Orders, Societies and organizations will be borne exclusively by those entities.
The costs of the above services shall be set by the Board of Directors of the Imperial Ethiopian College of Heraldry of the Solomonic Crown, Ltd. Such costs will be published periodically by the College and will be included in any documentation necessary for petitioning of services.

Pursuant to the Charter granted to the Imperial Ethiopian College of Heraldry of the Solomonic Crown, Ltd. by His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Zere Yacob Asfa Wossen on the Sixteenth Day of November of the year of Our Lord Two Thousand and One and of the Seven Hundred and Thirty Third year of the Solomonic Dynasty, I, Lawrence Edward Slight, Solomonic King of Arms, do hereby establish and ordain these regulations for the displaying and wearing of all insignia of the Imperial Ethiopian House of Selassie

INSIGNIA REGULATIONS
The Orders of Chivalry of the Imperial Solomonic Crown are the following:
The Order of the Seal of Solomon
The Order of the Queen of Sheba
The Order of the Trinity
The Order of Menelik II
The Order of the Star of Honor of Ethiopia
The Order of Saint Mary of Zion
The Solomonic Order of Merit
As with all Imperial Ethiopian Orders, every person upon whom an Order is conferred must receive from the Imperial Ethiopian College of Heraldry a Certificate or Brevet appropriate to the Order. Also upon the death of a member of an Order, his/her heirs or relatives are required to inform the College of Heraldry as to the disposition of the appropriate Insignia. Insignia may be returned to the College of Heraldry, to the Head of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie, or His Imperial Highness the Grand Master of the Order and the costs of the Insignia will be refunded. The Insignia may be inherited but must not be worn by non-members.
The Order of the Seal of Solomon is the most ancient Order. The Order of Solomon and of the Seal of Solomon is considered as one and the same and it comprises a Collar and five other classes. All ranks remain in the gift of Head of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie.
THE COLLAR
The Collar of Solomon was instituted by His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie the First in 1930. It is the highest distinction of the Order of the Seal of Solomon and is reserved to the Head of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie, except that as a mark of special regard it may be conferred upon members of the Imperial Family and upon Sovereigns of foreign countries; and further upon persons who have rendered exceptionally meritorious services in support of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie and the people of Ethiopia.
On the obverse side of the engraved Badge suspended from the border of the Collar are represented the Queen of Sheba approaching Solomon, and Ethiopia stretching forth her hands to God. In the surround are inscribed the words, “Our God is our Strength and our Refuge”. At the top of the Badge appear two Lions supporting the Crown of the Emperor of Ethiopia.
The Collar from which the Badge is suspended is a gold chain hanging low round the neck and having links cut in the shape of the Seal of Solomon.
The engraved Plaque is of the same design as the Badge except for the Crown and the Lions. The Plaque is worn on the left breast.
There are special ceremonial robes assigned for wear with the Collar. The Collar is to be worn on the “Collar days” specified at the end of these Regulations, and on occasion the subject of special command.
On occasions when the Collar is not worn, holders of this distinction shall wear the Cordon of Solomon together with the Badge and the Plaque pertaining to the Collar.
The number of holders of this distinction shall not exceed three apart from members of the Imperial Family, Sovereigns of foreign states and Heads of Imperial or Royal Houses.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND CORDON
The Cordon of the Order of the Seal of Solomon may be conferred upon Sovereigns, members of Royal Houses, and upon persons who have rendered meritorious services. The Cordon is a green Ribbon. Attached to the border of the Ribbon and suspended there from is a Badge, fifty-five millimeters in diameter, made with six points in the shape of the Seal of Solomon. In the center is the device of a Cross, and at the top of the Cross the device of a Crown.
The Plaque is in the shape of a regular octagon, ninety millimeters in diameter. Upon the octagon is the device of a Cross. Upon eight facets of the circumference are forty-eight points spreading out like rays. The Plaque is worn on the left breast. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed ten apart from members of the Imperial Family, Sovereigns of foreign states and Heads of Imperial or Royal Houses.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND OFFICER
The Insignia of the Grand Officer are a Badge suspended from the neck and a Plaque worn on the right breast. The Riband from which the Badge is suspended is of the same green colour as the Cordon. The engraved Badge and Plaque are of the same design as those detailed for the Cordon. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed twenty.
KNIGHT/DAME COMMANDER
The Insignia of the Commander are a Riband and engraved Badge worn around the neck, of the kind indicated for the Grand Officer, with sole omission of the Plaque. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed forty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME OFFICER
The Badge of the Class of Officer bears a Rosette and is worn on the breast. The colour of the Riband from which the Badge is suspended is green. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed sixty-five.
CHEVALIER/DAME
The Badge of the Class of Chevalier has no Rosette and is worn on the breast. The colour of the Riband is green as for the former Class. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed eighty-five.
The Order of the Queen of Sheba was instituted by His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie the First in 1930. It comprises a Collar and five other Classes. All ranks remain in the gift of Head of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie.
THE COLLAR
The Collar of the Queen of Sheba is a very high distinction and is reserved to the Head of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie except that as a mark of special regard it may be conferred upon members of the Imperial Family and upon Sovereigns and Presidents of foreign countries; and further upon persons who have rendered exceptional meritorious services.
The engraved Badge suspended from the border of the Collar is fifty-five millimeters in diameter, enamelled and made in the shape of the Seal of Solomon, and having three points. In the center is the device of a Star. Upon the Star appears the Queen of Sheba, crowned and in profile. At the top of the Badge is the device of a Crown.
The Collar, suspended from the neck and hanging low on the breast, is a gold chain having links cut in the shape of the Seal of Solomon.
The Plaque is composed of an equilateral triangle, and the centre is worked into the shape of the Seal of Solomon, in enamel. The diameter is eighty millimeters. Upon each facet is engraved the resemblance of a tongue of fire. In the surround are the words, “Wha is this that shineth like the dawn? The Queen of Sheba”. The Plaque is worn on the left breast.
The Collar of the Queen of Sheba is to be worn on the “Collar days” specified at the end of these Regulations. And on occasions the subject of special command.
On occasions when the Collar is not worn, holders of this distinction shall wear the Cordon of the Queen of Sheba together with the Badge and the Plaque pertaining to the Collar.

KNIGHT/DAME GRAND CORDON
The Cordon of the Order of the Queen of Sheba may be conferred upon members of Royal Houses and upon persons who have rendered meritorious services.
The Cordon is a Riband, wine-coloured, with green along each border. The Badge suspended from the border of the Cordon, and the engraved Plaque worn on the left breast are of the kind indicated for the Collar, with the sole omission of the enamelling. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed twenty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND OFFICER
The Insignia of the Grand Officer are a Badge worn at the neck and a Plaque worn on the right breast. The Riband from which the Badge is suspended is wine-coloured, with green along each border. The engraved Badge and Plaque are of the same designs as those detailed for the Cordon. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed forty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME COMMANDER
The Insignia of the Commander are a Riband and engraved Badge worn round the neck, of the kind indicated for the Grand Officer, with the sole omission of the Plaque. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed sixty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME OFFICER
The Badge of the Class of Officer bears a Rosette and is worn on the left breast. The colour of the Riband from which the Badge is suspended is wine-coloured, with green alone each border. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed eighty-five.
CHEVALIER/DAME
The Badge of the Class of Chevalier has no Rosette and is worn on the left breast. The colour of the Riband is wine-colour, with green along the border. The number of members of this Class is unlimited.
The Order of the Trinity was instituted by His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie the First in 1930. It is conferred upon persons who have rendered services to Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie and the people of Ethiopia in Classes in accordance with their services. The Riband of this Order is light red in colour. All ranks remain in the gift of Head of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie.
There are five Classes of the Order of the Trinity, as indicated in the following paragraphs.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND CORDON
The Grand Cordon hangs down from the right shoulder and crosses from the right side to the left. The Badge suspended from the border of the Cordon is eighty millimeters in diameter and has in its four corners engraved work like flower petals. The centre is rounded and divided into three facets. In these facets are represented in enamel the Three Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. In the surround are inscribed the words, “Blessed art Thou that dost see the depths, seated upon the Cherubim.” At the top of the Badge is the device of a Crown.
The Plaque to be worn on the left breast is of the same design as the Badge, save only that it is ornamented with a ring of engraved work resembling tongues of fire, with forty-four points. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed forty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND OFFICER
The Insignia of the Grand Officer are a Badge suspended at the neck and a Plaque worn on the right breast. The design and proportions of the engraved Badge and the Plaque are as stated for the Cordon. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed sixty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME COMMANDER
The Insignia of the Commander, worn around the neck, are of the kind indicated for the Grand Officer, with the sole omission of the Plaque. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed eighty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME OFFICER
The Badge of the Class of Officer includes a Rosette emblem and is worn on the left breast. Save only that its diameter id forty-five millimeters, the style of the engraved Badge is of the kind indicated for the Commander. The number of members of this Class is unlimited.
CHEVALIER/DAME
The Badge of the Class of Chevalier is worn on the left breast and is of the kind for the Officer, with the sole omission of the Rosette. The number of members of this Class is unlimited.
The Order of Menelik the Second was instituted in 1924, in the reign of the Empress Zauditu. It is a distinction conferred upon persons who have rendered services to Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie and the people of Ethiopia in Classes in accordance with their services. The Riband of this Order is yellow, with green, yellow and red along each border. All ranks remain in the gift of Head of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie.
There are five Classes of the Order of Menelik the Second, as indicated in the following paragraphs.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND CORDON
The Grand Cordon hangs down from the right shoulder and crosses from right side to the left. The Badge suspended from the border of the Cordon is fifty millimeters in diameter and is engraved in the shape of an Apostles’ Cross. The center is circular and worked in enamel. On the circle is a Lion bearing the Flag of Ethiopia. Above the Lion are inscribed the words “Mo’a andasa z. Y.” (abbreviation for “The Lion of the Tribe of Judah hath conquered”). At the top of the Badge is the device of a Crown. On the reverse side of the Badge are inscribed the letters “M. II” (abbreviation for “Menelik the Second”).
The Plaque to be worn on the left breast is circular and worked in the likeness of rays. On the circle appears the design of the Badge. The diameter of the circle is eighty millimeters. Upon the circumference appear pointed rays, eight smooth and eight in fretwork. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed fifty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND OFFICER
The Insignia of the Grand Officer are a Badge suspended at the neck and Plaque worn on the right breast. The design and proportions of the engraved Badge and Plaque are as stated for the Cordon. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed sixty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME COMMANDER
The Insignia of the Commander, worn round the neck are of the kind indicated for the Grand Officer, with the sole omission of the Plaque. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed eighty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME OFFICER
The Badge of the Class of Officer includes a Rosette emblem and is worn on the left breast. Save only that its diameter is sixty millimeters it is of the king for the Cordon. The number of members of this Class shall is unlimited.
CHEVALIER/DAME
The Badge of the Class of Chevalier is worn on the left breast and is of the kind indicated for the Officer, with the sole omission of the Rosette. The number of members of this Class is unlimited.
The Order of the Star of Honour of Ethiopia is a distinction conferred upon persons who have rendered services to the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie and the people of Ethiopia, and similarly upon persons who have performed tasks beneficial to the Ethiopian people; they are assigned to Classes in accordance with the importance of their work. The Riband of this Order is of green, yellow and red, the colours of the Flag of Ethiopia. All ranks remain in the gift of Head of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie.
There are five Classes of the Order of the Star of Honour of Ethiopia, as indicated in the following paragraphs.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND CORDON
The Grand Cordon hangs down from the right shoulder and crosses from the right side to the left. The Badge suspended from the border of the Cordon is eighty millimeters in diameter. The circular medallion is in fretwork in the shape of a shield. On the circumference appear eleven large and eleven small pointer rays. The flange at the top of the Badge is worked in the likeness of a heart, and in the centre is the device of a Crown. The engraved Plaque to be worn on the left breast is of the same design and proportions as those of the Badge, with the sole omission of the flange. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed one hundred.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND OFFICER
The Insignia of the Grand Officer are a Badge suspended at the neck and a Plaque worn on the right breast. The Badge is eighty millimeters in diameter and is in blind fretwork. In the center is a Riband. In the surround are eight pointed rays. The flange at the top of the Badge is of the kind stated for the Cordon. The engraved Plaque is of the same design and proportions as those of the Badge, with the sole omission of the flange. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed one hundred and fifty.
KNIGHT/DAME COMMANDER
The Insignia of the Commander, worn round the neck are of the kind indicated for the Grand Officer, with the sole omission of the Plaque. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed two hundred
KNIGHT/DAME OFFICER
The Badge of the Class of Officer includes a Rosette emblem and is worn on the left breast. The Badge is fifty-five millimeters and is worked in the likeness of a Star. In the centre is a boss. The flange at the top of the Badge is worked in the likeness of a heart only. The number of members of this Class is unlimited.
CHEVALIER/DAME
The Badge of the Class of Chevalier is worn on the left breast and is of the kind indicated for the Officer, with the sole omission of the Rosette. The number of members of this Class is unlimited.
The Order of Saint Mary of Zion was established by His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Zere Yacob Asfa Wossen Haile Selassie in November 2000 at the City of London. It maintains the Collar and five other Classes: Knight/Dame Grand Cross, Knight/Dame Grand Officer, Knight/Dame Commander, Knight/Dame Officer and Chevalier/Dame. Entrance into the Order shall be at the Chevalier/Dame Class for general membership and at the Knight/Dame Commander rank for members of Ethiopian or Foreign Nobility. All Classes remain in the gift of Head of the Imperial Solomonic House of Selassie.
THE COLLAR
The Collar of Saint Mary of Zion is a very high distinction and may be conferred upon members of the Imperial Family and upon Sovereigns and Presidents of foreign countries; Recognized Heads of Royal Houses; Recognized Heads of Major Religions; and further upon members of the Order of Saint Mary of Zion as a recognition of enduring service to the Order and as a recognition of specific services of a most uncommon magnitude or significance to the Order of Saint Mary of Zion, to the Imperial House of Ethiopia, or to the people of Ethiopia. The Collar is reserved as the sole gift of the Grand Master of the Order. The number of holders of this distinction shall not exceed six apart from members of the Imperial Family, Sovereigns of foreign states and Heads of Imperial or Royal Houses.
Those honored with the rank of Grand Cross with Collar are entitled to wear the Collar of the Order on appropriate solemn occasions and to wear a gold breast star of the Order of Saint Mary of Zion during more common occasions. These two insignia are never worn together and the Cordon of the Order of Saint Mary is not worn in either instance.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND CROSS
The Class of Knight/Dame Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Mary of Zion may be conferred upon members of the Imperial Family, of Royal Houses and Nobiliary families or upon persons of high honor in service to the people of Ethiopia.
The cordon is light blue with a mulberry stripe inside the border. Attached to the border of the Ribbon and suspended therefrom is a Badge, two inches by one and a half inches, presenting sixteen points in the shape of a star of mulberry. The device of a cross-bottony of sky-blue with the Icon of Saint Mary and Child centered; above the cross is the device of a crown. The cordon is worn over the right shoulder with the Badge at the left hip. The cordon is worn only with evening dress under the coat but over the vest.
The Plaque is a eight point Star with the Badge of the Order in the center, three and one half inches in diameter. The Badge is as described above, the sole omission of only the Crown. The Plaque is worn on the left breast. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed fifty.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND OFFICER
The Insignia of the Knight/Dame Grand Officer is a badge suspended from the neck and a Plaque worn on the right breast. The riband from which the badge is suspended is of the same design as the cordon of the Grand Cross. The engraved badge and Plaque are of the same design as those detailed for the Grand Cross. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed seventy-five.
KNIGHT/DAME COMMANDER
The Insignia of the Knight/Dame Commander is a riband and engraved Badge and Commanders Trophy worn around the neck. The design of the Badge is the same as that of the Grand Officer with the omission of the mulberry star. The design of the Trophy is that of a Cross-bottony of sky blue centered upon a square of gold with mulberry inserts, under which is a scroll of gold turned mulberry with three cross-bottony of sky blue. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed one hundred.
KNIGHT/DAME OFFICER
The Insignia of the Knight/Dame Officer is a riband and engraved Badge and Officers Trophy worn around the neck. The design of the Badge is of that described above for Commander. The design of the Trophy is that of a gold band bearing two Cross-bottony of sky blue centered upon a shield of mulberry bordered with gold. The number of members of this Class shall be unlimited.
CHEVALIER/DAME
The Insignia of the Chevalier/Dame is a riband and engraved Badge worn around the neck. The design of the Badge is of that described above for Commander. The esoteric honorific of "Chevalier/Dame" and the postnominal of "KMZ" are bestowed at investiture. The number of Chevalier/Dame is unlimited.
The Imperial Solomonic Order of Merit was instituted by His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Zere Yacob Asfa Wossen in June 2000 at the City of London. It comprises four Classes: Knight/Dame Grand Cross, Knight/Dame Commander with Star, Knight/Dame Commander, and Knight/Dame and may be conferred upon persons who have rendered meritorious services to the Crown and the people of Ethiopia. All Classes remain in the gift of His Imperial Highness, Crown Prince Zere Yacob Asfa Wossen Haile Selassie.
KNIGHT/DAME GRAND CROSS
The Class of Knight/Dame Grand Cross of the Imperial Solomonic Order of Merit may be conferred upon persons who have rendered exceptional services to the Crown and the people of Ethiopia.
The Cordon is green in colour, with red stripes framed by yellow stripes along the border. The badge suspended from the border of the Cordon is in enameled green in the shape of the Seal of Solomon with an ebony circle in the center, upon the circle is the Lion of Judah crowned and holding the banner of Ethiopia and upon the top point of the Seal of Solomon is a device of a Crown. The cordon is worn over the right shoulder with the Badge at the left hip. The cordon is worn only with evening dress under the coat but over the vest.
The Plaque is a seven-point star with the badge of the Order in the center. The Plaque is worn on the left breast. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed thirty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME COMMANDER WITH STAR
The Insignia of the Knight/Dame Commander with Star is a badge suspended from the neck and a Plaque worn on the right breast. The riband from which the badge is suspended is of the same design as the cordon of the Grand Cross. The engraved badge and Plaque are of the same design as those detailed for the Grand Cross. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed forty-five.
KNIGHT/DAME COMMANDER
The insignia of the Knight/Dame Commander are a badge suspended from the neck by a riband and a Plaque worn on the right breast, both of the kind indicated for the Grand Cross. The riband shall be of the same colors and design of the Cordon of the Grand Cross. The number of members of this Class shall not exceed seventy.
CHEVALIER/DAME
The badge of the Knight/Dame is a badge suspended from the neck by a riband, of the kind indicated for the Knight/Dame Commander. The number of members of this Class is unlimited.

1. Gentlemen’s Evening Dress
The manner of wearing Orders, Decorations and Medals with Evening Dress, including Military Mess Dress and formal Kilt wear, is as follows:

A broad (sash) riband is worn under the black coat and over the waistcoat (see left). The riband crosses over the right shoulder to the left hip. The Order badge rests on the left hip, being attached beneath the bow.
Only one broad (sash) riband is worn at any one time. A maximum of four stars (of various classes) can be worn on the left hand side of the coat. The diagrams below show the positioning:

One full size neck decoration is worn on a miniature width riband under the shirt collar, being suspended just below the position of the knot of the tie (see above).
